The prototype first flew in 1963, and the C-160Z in 1969.

The wingspan is 40 meters, height is 13.3 meters, and the length is 32.4 meters. Powered by two Rolls Royce Tyne R. Ty 20 Mk 22 Turboprops with an output of 4550 kW each, the top speed was 536 km/h, and the range was 4558 km with an 8 ton payload.

The SAAF received it's first delivery in 1969.
